Druids v St Julians (home) 14 Nov 2015

40-5 Win

Druids give better display

A wet and very soft pitch welcomed St. Julian’s HSOB rfc on Chippenham Mead to face Monmouth Druids. This season has been a difficult one for the home side caused by injuries, retirements and player unavailability. Thankfully, these problems seem to be slowly disappearing and Team Manager Bob Prewett and the Monmouth rugby club welcome this change of circumstances.

This latest match was hastily arranged and local memories seem to indicate that this is the first fixture between the clubs. The kick off was framed by a grey day and miserable damp conditions.

It was evident from the start that the Druids showed more promise than the visitors with the pack winning good set piece ball which allowed the backs to run and pass freely. Outside Half Rhys Ricketts varied his play with his kicking, running and passing. Centre Kurt Pearce benefitted by scoring the first two tries with strong evasive running, both of which were improved by Ricketts.

The forwards were not to be ignored however and prop Will Dixon used his bulk to force his way over the St Julians try line. So within the first 30 minutes the Druids,’ caught the visitors cold’to lead by 19-0.
Centre Matt King side stepped through the St Julians mid-field to touch own behind the posts and Ricketts converted to stretch the lead to 26-0.

Again King threatened with a long weaving run but a dropped pass with the St Julian line beckoning, just failed to stretch the Druids lead.
Just before the interval King scored his second try converted by Ricketts to give the Druids an emphatic 33 points lead.

Far from rolling over St Julians showed real tenacity by defending strongly in the second half. Despite improved tackling, the visitors showed little attacking threat.

The last Druids try came from a break by flanker Calum Gleed who gave a short pass to Rhys Ricketts to score plus kick the conversion to make the score 40-0.

At the final whistle, not to be undone, St Julians made a rare raid into the Druids 22 metre area and scored an unconverted try after a series of rucks.

Good displays from the Druids backs-Ricketts, King and Pearce but a strong forward effort gave enough possession to win the game. Dan Ansty and Gareth Morgan tackled endlastly whilst Gleed and with improved fitness, Dixon will give further benefits.
