Match Report - Longlevens

Monmouth visited Longlevens RFC on Saturday in a replacement fixture and despite a wind that seriously disrupted the flow of the game, came away with a 64-7 win which included 10 tries to only one interception one against.

Monmouth promised a great deal at the start but were too eager, making mistakes in the adverse weather conditions, and allowing scoring opportunities to slip by.

As a result it took them a full twenty minutes before Dave Croudace was to score a try which he converted himself against a the wind and a spirited, if makeshift, defence.

Longlevens were next kept in the game by the interception of a badly signalled pass, until No.8 Leighton Phillips, who improves game upon game, ran in to score from a full thirty yards but not near enough for the conversion.

Longlevens were now becoming stretched, and in the 12 minutes before half-time centre Lane was to score twice and wing-forward Edwards once as a fine reward for his all-out commitment style.

Half-time was little comfort for either side in the whistling wind but it certainly allowed 2nd Row Johnny Powell enough recovery time for him to charge through several tackles inside the first five minutes of the second half, for the first of his personal tally of what was to become two tries.

The example the big man set, although more rare these days, obviously worked, because in a mere five minutes more, his understudy, Matt Edwards was to score a mirror image try.

Wayne Wadley, at prop, was next to take up the scoring challenge, but centre Andrew Davies, ensured the backs were not forgotten by yet another straight cut through the now wavering Gloucestershire defence, with kicks at goal by 19 point Croudace, now relatively easy with the wind and from centre field.

The forwards were now queuing up and Stockley showed a clean pair of heels in a rare gallop for the line. (Perhaps the forwards knew the beer was on those that failed to cross the line?)

The referee was to spoil the fun though, because with several injuries on both sides with the summer hard ground, he blew for an early finish to a game that Longlevens had kindly organised at very short notice because of the further postponement of the league match against Crumlin.
