Match Report - Ynysddu

On yet another sunny autumn day, Monmouth entertained Ynysddu playing first towards the river end and despite the wind it was fly-half Croudace who was to open the scoring with two sweetly struck penalties in the tenth and thirteenth minute. But then the worm turned. Ynysddu lost a man to the sin-bin for punching and yet the remaining 14 players staged a come back before his ten minutes were up, levelling the game at 6-6 with two penalties of their own.

Croudace, kicking well as usual, pulled one back and the game continued to swing to and fro but with the Monmouth pack having the upper hand. The front five have not had to bow to any other this season yet which perhaps says much for the solidity of the front five (although some might claim it is the GL).

With only minutes to go before half-time, this dominance displayed itself in the ball being recycled through four phases before Johnny Powell using his power was driven over by his colleagues from some 20 yards for the first try of the match which was converted.

Even with a half-time 14-6and the fact that Monmouth were now playing into their 'home' corner, there was no guarantee against an Ynysddu team which was as strong as always and captain Mark Jones spelled out what was required of his players.

The game tightened up and it was a full 20 minutes before their was a further score, when Stuart Boylan was credited with the score following a pushover by the pack who were still the dominating influence in scrums and lines-out. Croudace again converted for a 21-6 lead.

Concentration began to slip a little with this comfortable lead and Ynysddu from a period of broken play were to score next to reducing the deficit to eight points.

But Monmouth were not to be deprived of a fourth league win in succession and after play first went left and then swung back right, Rob Frost belying his years was there on the overlap to score a try which his young fly-half successor was again to convert for a final score of 28-13 which was a fair reward for the effort currently being displayed on the field. They will certainly need this resolve and more when travelling to take on Bargoed who have never been renowned for taking prisoners. The next scheduled league home game on 26 October promises to be even more exciting when the visitors will be the up and coming Fairwater.
