Druids xv v Llandaff

Druids Snatch Victory

Monmouth Druids gained a thrilling victory over Llandaff to prevent their losing streak extending to three games. The Druids side was again short of confidence and a shortage of key players as they faced the visitors on Chippenham Mead.

Llandaff started well and caused problems in the home defence, particularly at the line out where they are quite strong.

However the Druids took the lead when from a maul on the visitors 22metre line, Prop Chris Davies sped away on the blind side to cross unopposed for an unconverted try. Llandaff who were having much of the play, hit back and scored a try when their inside centre cut through to score a converted try to give them a deserved lead.

This was increased when their right wing touched down after a quickly taken line out. The conversion attempt hit the bar, then the post but then fell short.

Facing a 12-5 deficit in the second period the Druids were expected to put in a real effort and an attempt to turn around the scoreline. Llandaff had other ideas but their defence started to look shaky. With twenty minutes left the Druids changed tactics and decided to use their forwards more in an attacking vein.

This tactic proved successful and Llandaff were forced onto the back foot and they defended furiously. From a scrum on the visitors 5metre line the Druids forward power showed, as they drove over the Llandaff line for Number Eight and Captain Harvey Morgan to touch down. This was unconverted but put the Druids to within one score of the visitors.

The Druids employed rolling mauls and Llandaff found them difficult to stop. From such a maul the Druids drove slowly to the Llandaff line for Harvey Morgan to get his second try which was unconverted.

There was no further score, but a deserved triumph for the home side. Sheer determination and tactical awareness earned them the victory.
