Monmouth Under 9’s battle well to earn draw It was a fine Autumn morning at Chippenham Fields on Sunday where Monmouth RFC Under 9’s welcomed a strong team from Berry Hill for a very close fought match. Monmouth again had their guard down for the first 5 minutes of the match which resulted in Berry Hill taking control of the game and scoring 2 well earned tries. The game seemed lost at this point of the match, but then some excellent rucking and mauling by Hamish O’Hare, and a number of great breaks by Matthew Goldsmith spurred on the team to start their come-back. The whole of the Monmouth team showed their true character, and after some excellent rucking again by Hamish O’Hare at one of the break-downs, the ball was passed out to Paris Taylor who headed for the try line and fought off a number of tackles to cross the line for Monmouth’s first try. It was then ‘Game On’ with everything to play for. Berry Hill had a number of attempts to stretch their lead, but they were thwarted close to the try line on 2 occasions by some excellent tackling from the Monmouth team. Monmouth then secured the ball, and after a drive up to the half way line by the forwards, Toby Lane picked up the ball from the ruck and broke through the Berry Hill defence. Toby headed for the try line, and ran though 4 Berry Hill defenders to score a fantastic try under the posts to even the scores. Monmouth continued to apply the pressure in a thrilling final 5 minutes of the game, and nearly clinched the match when Rhys Carlton almost crossed the line, but had the ball knocked out of his hand by some good Berry Hill defence. As the final whistle was blown, both teams were applauded by the crowd for a very entertaining and nail biting match. This Sunday the under 9’s are at home against English opponents Hucclecote.
