Monmouth U9’s clinch victory in nail biting clash

Monmouth RFC under 9’s travelled to Cwmbran last Sunday determined to make amends for their heavy loss to Cwmbran at home earlier this season. It was a fine sunny day, and Monmouth were sporting their new Lidl logo rugby tops with pride thanks to the recent sponsorship deal with the retail chain.

As the teams lined up to start the game, the Cwmbran lads looked really up for the game, and seemed generally much bigger than the Monmouth boys.

Cwmbran won the toss and kicked off. The ball was gathered up by Monmouth and a maul formed. James Williams wrestled out the ball and passed to Leo Herriot who then passed out to Callum MacIntosh on the wing. Callum made a spectacular darting run from inside his own half running past four Cwmbran players to score the first try in the corner.

Cwmbran, clearly shocked by this early try fought back well and levelled up the game with a try. Spurred on by this, despite some great tackling and defensive work by Monmouth, Cwmbran scored another try.

Cwmbran seemed to be running away with the game when Monmouth recovered the ball inside the Cwmbran half, and Regan Bowen dashed toward the Cwmbran line to score again for Monmouth. Clearly this motivated Cwmbran who then scored three tries within in quick succession.

At this point in the game it seemed like another defeat was on the cards for Monmouth – now trailing by five tries to two. However, the Monmouth team never let their heads drop, and thanks to some great teamwork the boys started to get back into the game.

Towards the middle of the second half a maul formed and an almost superhuman effort by the Monmouth boys drove back Cwmbran towards their line, the ball then came out to Todd Woods who crossed the line for a great try. This was followed by a fantastic individual effort from Monmouth newcomer Morgan Walters who scored his debut try following a run from the halfway line.

Monmouth were now only trailing by one try, and this really spurred on the whole team. Suddenly, Rhys Carlton drove through a maul and sprinted to the line for another Monmouth try to level the scores. The scores were now even, and Monmouth could see victory in sight.

Within the dying minutes of the game, again after some fine rucking and mauling by Monmouth, the ball was passed out to Tom Watkins on the wing. Tom could see the try-line and sprinted forward, he dodged passed three Cwmbran lads to score the final try in the corner.

The final whistle blew shortly after this try, and the supporters applauded a superb display of Rugby from both teams.

The final score was Cwmbran 25 Monmouth 30
