1XV v Brynithel (Home) 18 Feb 2012

36-0 Win

Further League Advance

After a two week lay-off because of the weather, despite some rustiness showing in their play, Monmouth beat visitors Brynithel by 38 points without reply at the Sports Ground last Saturday, gaining a valuable bonus point in the process.

Brynithel had arrived with less than a full squad and to the credit especially of their prop who stuck at it, scrums only became 'passive' midway through the second half when he eventually left the field through injury.

Monmouth’s greatest strength is their pack it might have been easier for Brynithel to call a halt earlier but they were made of tougher stuff than that, although their continual dissent with whoever would listen had not endeared them to the referee.

After the opening skirmishes, Monmouth were first to settle and from a quick penalty centre Dewi Lane broke through two tackles to score near the posts. Fly-half Rhys Ricketts added the conversion with the first of six successful kicks of the afternoon, most far more difficult than this one.

A further kick added another three points for holding the ball after the tackle but generally Brynithel gave as good as they got. The conditions were excellent for running rugby with Monmouth putting several flowing moves together and Brynithel being particularly threatening on the counter-attack out if defence.

It took time for pressure to tell as the visitors edged the turnover count, but the concentrated set-piece effort of the Monmouth pack, helped by the reliable front line jumping of veteran John Powell eventually brought a succession of attempted push-over tries after half an hour when from a back row pick up, No 8 Mike Griffiths, on yet another Player of the Month performance, drove over for Ricketts to make it 17-0 at the break.

With all going well, the Coach asked for closer support play and more clinical execution of moves and Monmouth were rewarded by an interception try by Lane in the first minute of the second half. Ricketts was again on target.

Playing into their favourite corner with what wind advantage there was, Brynithel now struggled to make ground upfield, and succumbed to full-back Anthony Layne stepping inside the covering defence following a smart inter-passing move in the right hand corner. The conversion neatly bisected the upright and cross-bar from far out.

2nd row Sam Harding completed the try scoring with the second interception of the afternoon with no-one likely to stop him.

Brynithel stuck at it though and when Griffiths was sent to the sin-bin with six minutes or so to go they tried hard for a score of their own, but Monmouth do not give in easily these days as they defend their league leading position and the game ended with a clean sweep.

International rugby again intervenes next week and then the biggest test of the season arrives with an away trip to current runners-up Hafodyrynys on 3 March.

U10 v Gwernyfed (Away) 19 Feb 2012

5-20 Loss

Monmouth Bears made the trek to Gwernyfed on a chilly morning, for their first game in four weeks and their first rugby of any sorts since the end of January. Such inactivity was far from ideal preparation for a match against the formidable hosts, who so far this season, have been the only team to conquer the marauding Bears.

The match was played on a glue-pot of a pitch, which may have accounted for the many errors from both teams in the early stages. Once again, a real battle of attrition ensued with the tackle count from both sides rapidly ascending. The Bears took time to settle, as the hosts were more dominant and decisive at the breakdown, but despite the hosts having the greater early possession and territory, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. The Bears were able to win some precious ball, which was quickly swung out wide to the speedy Roderick Ho, who evaded two would-be tacklers on the touch-line and then run half the length of the pitch to touch down.

Back came the well-drilled hosts, smarting at falling behind despite their dominance. Their cause was made far easier, with the Bears being regularly pinged at the breakdown for off-side and having too many players in the ruck, thus rewarding them with free possession. It wasn’t long before they restored parity with their first try, with the score deadlocked 5 – 5 at half-time.

The second period was to become one-sided in favour of the hosts – they were able to make regular changes in personnel, introducing fresh legs and energy whilst the limited Bears squad had to struggle on, with some players having to grit their teeth to play through the pain barrier, having received some heavy knocks. The hosts went on to run in three second-half tries to run out comfortable winners against the by now dispirited Bears.

This was a big wake-up call for the Bears, with some key basics needing to be revisited on the training pitch if they are to be more competitive and clinical against stronger opponents. The Player of the Week Award was deservedly presented to Roderick Ho for his fine try and excellent work-rate throughout the game.

Final Score: Gwernyfed 20 – 5 Monmouth

U13 v Gwernyfed (Away) 19 Feb 2012

34-14 Win

Monmouth Crusaders (under 13’s) travelled to Gwernyfed last weekend and after a hard fought game came out on top.

Monmouth took an early lead with a try from Centre Tom Watkins, and this was closely followed with a try from Rhys Carlton. Gwernyfed came back into the match with a converted try, but this was countered just before half time with a touch down from Monmouth winger Rhys Kedward.

The Crusaders came out strongly in the second half with Rhys Carlton scoring 2 further tries securing his hat-trick. Gwernyfed showed good spirit following this and caught the Monmouth defence sleeping and scored a converted try.
Monmouth finished the match strongly though with Centre Morgan Phillips scoring a try just before the final whistle.

The final score was Monmouth 34, Gwernyfed 14

Tries: Rhys Carlton (3), Morgan Phillips, Tom Watkins, Rhys Kedward

U8 v Gwernyfed (Away) 19 Feb 2012

55-20 Win

As half term took its toll Sunday saw a much reduced Chiefs team travel to Gwernyfed. A powerful and fast running Gwernyfed team beat the Chiefs 11-4 in their first match with Monmouth tries from Nicolaj (2) and Finlay. The chiefs then payed another poor half with Gwernyfed scoring 5 tries without reply.

As the Monmouth U7 had not travelled the chiefs then took on the Gwernyfed U7 side.

They played a more convincing game winning by 7 tries to 3.

This final game saw a much better team effort with tries from Nicolaj and Richard (2). All in all a disappointing day in particular the poor attendance and need to borrow players from the opposition. Hopefully better weather and a return to routine coupled with more team and less individual play will result in a return to form in the coming weeks.

U9 v Gwernyfed (Away) 19 Feb 2012

35-20 Win

It all started ominusly with several players unable to make it due to injuries picked up to key players like (ben - 'big hitting' Morgan with man flu and Adam 'billy wizz' Davies with a pos broken arm,) the trip to Gwynufred was looking daunting at best...

We arrived to find we had only 9 players but luckily enough the home side only had 9 also. After talking the the home coach he showed me the pitch which was Massive and wasn't far of an adult pitch. After a quick chat to the boys and some challenges put down to the forwards to start putting some tackles in as 'Big hitting' Ben Morgan wasn't there, the game started with a flurry with the home side taking the start but our forwards leading from the front and putting some huge hits in and turning over the ball. Monmouth spun it wide and reaped the benifit of our broken field runners to race the length and score..1 - 0 to us, unheard of for the boys to start so strong.

The rest of the game went try for try with our tackling holding strong and hard running by our backs and forwards giving us a 5 - 3 lead into the second half.
We started the half with the words off the coaches to run hard and straight for 2 hits and then spin it wide to run their chunckier pack around, we started strong with Robby scoring straight from the start, running straight through some weak tackles, obviously our plan of running them round was working as gwynufred were looking out on their feet with them looking for contact after one pass and quite often always to the same players.

The game finished 7 - 4 to monmouth who's superior team work and direct running ruled the day.

Special mention has to go to:
Our two second rows - Angus and Robby who were as strong as they were fast and caused problems all over the park,
Henry for his 'David and Goliath style' tackling of the big men of Gwynufred,
Oli for running 70yrs to score in the corner (and then feeling so shattered that he had to sit down in the middle of the field in a heap to get some treatement / take a breath..but the sight of his mother running on immediately sprung the lad to his feet to carry on!)
And Lewis for his first nice loop with Rui to run 30yrds to score his 1st try of the season in the corner.

Finally, man of the match had to go to Rui for his 'coming of age' in Ben's absence and putting in some huge hits all day.

Well done, performance of the season...never beaten Gwynyfred in 3yrs..

Tries: Angus (2), Robby (2), Lewis, Oli, Henry
