chairman's welcome

The Club can trace its history back to the 23rd May 1873 when Monmouth Rugby Club was formed, making Monmouth RFC one of the oldest rugby clubs in Wales and a founder Member Club of the WRU. This season we will see all teams returning to Monmouth RFC traditional colours of royal blue and gold hoops. All 13 teams will have new playing shirts, shorts and socks with all 350 players enjoying new drill tops, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. The game came to be played in the town through a Master at Monmouth Boys School and it was a combination of older school boys and town players who initially established the Club. It was fitting therefore that we started our celebrations with a Summer Ball at the Boys School Pavilion on the 13th July 2013.

Last season saw the 1st XV establish themselves in Division 4 East, under the superb captaincy of Will Copley. We welcome Dragons Player Development Officer, Chris Cornford, to the Club as he joins Ian Seymour and Martin Davies as a part of the senior coaching team. We look forward to a top of the league finish this season, with the excellent players that we have available in the 1st XV squad. We wish new Captain Sam Harding and the team the very best of luck.

The success of the Druids team over the last two seasons has seen them rewarded by playing in the top division of the Pontypool and Newport Districts WRC 2nds League. A big thank you to inspirational captain Dave Brace and we wish new captain Nick Phillips and the strong Druids
squad the very best of luck for the forthcoming season.

The Monmouth Youth Team continues to go from strength to strength this season with nearly 50 registered players and several Dragons District and Crawshays XV caps being won by the players. We expect great results from this exceptional group of young players this season.

Young Rugby continues to flourish, with Andrew Davies being appointed as our Player Development Officer to look after the 30 + Coaching Team and ensure that sufficient players are recruited from our local schools for the Club to maintain all 13 rugby teams from Under 7’s
through to the 1st XV.

To celebrate our 140th season, the Clubhouse is being refurbished from top to bottom. The Players Lounge upstairs will provide an excellent facility for players of all ages and for the greater community to utilise for parties and social events.

May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work over the course of the last 12 months. The 2013 / 14 season promises to be a very exciting time for Monmouth RFC, as we celebrate 140 years of rugby in Monmouth.
