welcome young rugby
Last season was a successful one for Monmouth Young Rugby on many fronts. The 250 rugby players enjoyed a full season of fixtures, despite difficult weather conditions. All age divisions were successful in producing attractive and winning rugby, with all players taking part in the team effort.
We introduced ‘Tribalism’ over each age group last season, with each of our ten teams being provided with their own team names. The Under 7’s Chiefs through to the Under 16’s Sharks enjoyed a camaraderie and team ethos that developed and accelerated throughout the season. Tremendous support from our sponsors
allowed us to provide all teams with team branded Samurai playing shirts and sponsored rain jackets, bringing uniformity to our playing kit.
The third Monmouth Young Rugby Festival held in October last year was one of the most successful to date. With over 40 teams, over all 10 age groups, and over 700 rugby players taking part in the tournament. With the Monmouth VETs narrowly beating a strong Berry Hill VETs side, with the help of our local Member of Parliament, David Davies, offering his assistance on the wing. It proved to be a fantastic day. Tournament sponsors MGM Sports enjoyed a good day selling their excellent sportswear to the 2000 festival attendees.
Great coaching is critical to the future success of our organisation and with over 30 coaches striving to spread the open rugby gospel, our coaching set up continues to go from strength to strength. No fewer than four of our top coaches have been sponsored to attend at Regional Level 2 coaching courses this summer, with a further three due to attend throughout the new season.
The playing season ended with a fantastic tour to Torquay where over 160 players and parents enjoyed some great team bonding as well as some fantastic weather. The teams that went on tour acquitted themselves well, displaying some sublime open running rugby, with every team winning honours in their respective age groups.
The end of season Awards Evening saw each team catching up on their season by Power Point on a giant plasma screen, played to inspirational music. The boys enjoyed the evening and there were a few tears of pride from the parents, coaches and team managers!
Thank you to our 750 plus registered family members for their fantastic efforts last season. Thank you also to our incredible sponsors, the 50 plus Coaches, First Aiders, Team Managers and Monmouth Young Rugby Officers for their superb efforts in making last season the success that it undoubtedly was.
I look forward to a fantastic 2011 / 2012 season.
Chairman, Monmouth Young Rugby
