young rugby chairman's welcome
I am delighted to be writing my first note for the annual handbook & website as Chairman of Young Rugby. This will be the fourth season of me being involved with the club and I have been very impressed with the level of support and enthusiasm given by the many volunteers who work on behalf of all the players and their parents to ensure the club grows and develops in a sustainable way over the coming years.
As the New Chairman of Young Rugby I would like to build upon the good work already achieved by Young Rugby and will work towards developing the working relationships already in place with the Senior club and local community Groups and Businesses.
Last season saw many successes within Young Rugby. Hot food was reintroduced at the Club on Sundays for all age groups and was a great achievement by Rachel Davies supported by Mums from a few age groups. Rachel has committed to continuing this but will need 2 volunteers from each age group to commit to helping every few weeks on a rota basis.
At the start of the season Simon Brett took on the challenge of re-establishing the U15’s age group. He started the season with 3 players and ended the season with 16 players who were able to take part in their first tournament at Abergavenny at the end of the season. Our Player Development Officer, Andrew Davies, has agreed to take up the challenge of reforming the U13’s for next season.
Rob Pilot organised our 5th successful tournament and this coming season will deliver our 6th Annual Tournament, which promises to be bigger and better again. Rob was also instrumental in organising the club’s first open day for Young Rugby which saw over 100 boys go through the Dragons assault course and gave us a good start with over 30 players registering on the day for the coming season. This early registration will become the norm as this really helps with the
planning and ordering of kit for the coming season.
Jon Henry organised the end of season tour which saw the U7’s and U9s travelling to Minehead for the weekend with both teams coming back with winners trophies. Jon has already booked the tour for April 2014. We had a fantastic time and hope we can take more age groups this coming season.
There are lots of people, too many to mention, that dedicate a tremendous amount of time and effort to the club to ensure that we continue to grow and offer a very inclusive approach to rugby
for the community.
I am really looking forward to the coming season and continuing the good work with all the current volunteers and hopefully lots of new volunteers. We always need extra help, so if you would like to be more involved and aren't sure how you go about it, please let me know and we can chat about it.
Very Best wishes to everyone for the coming season.
