As half term took its toll Sunday saw a much reduced Chiefs team travel to Gwernyfed. A powerful and fast running Gwernyfed team beat the Chiefs 11-4 in their first match with Monmouth tries from Nicolaj (2) and Finlay. The chiefs then payed another poor half with Gwernyfed scoring 5 tries without reply.
As the Monmouth U7 had not travelled the chiefs then took on the Gwernyfed U7 side.
They played a more convincing game winning by 7 tries to 3.
Sunday morning was warm and sunny despite and on overnight frost and the Chippy was in perfect condition. Berry Hill brought eight players with them and due to careful planning (or good luck ) Monmouth U8s had 7 regulars and one new player. We played two full games with all eight players on the field for both games - a great introduction to Tag Rugby for Rees, our first timer, who aquitted himself well.
The monmouth U8's travelled to Pontyclun on Sunday. They played two matches against a well drilled Pontyclun U8 team. In the first game Pontyclun started strongly with some excellent passing Rugby showing the boys what can happen ' when you let the ball do the work for you'! As a result of this Ponyclun ran out 9-3 winners despite a brace of tries for the ever reliable Nicolaj.
Sunday dawned cold and windy with heavy rain forecast, fortunately the rain held off but there were some very cold parents and supporters on the touch line, luckily they were in for an exciting morning of Rugby. Monmouth U8s had two games to play, firstly RTB Ebbw Vale and then Croesyceilog.
Winter was in the air as the Chiefs limbered up for their match against Pontyclun today. Despite some absentees the boys went in to the first game full of confidence. Two matches were played with Pontyclun rotating their squads.
In the first game there was some good flowing rugby from both sides. The support play and passing from Monmouth were much improved. Monmouth started full of confidence but some poor tagging left them trailing 5-4 at the final whistle. Some great tries were scored by Joseph (2), Nicolaj and Finlay.
The U8s travelled away to a sunny, calm Berry Hill on Sunday 13th. We fielded a team of eight and played three games, two full matches and one short 5 minute decider. As it was Remembrance Sunday we had a two minute silence before the matches.
The first game was won 4 tries to 1 and was a superb display of tag rugby. Probably the U8s best display so far this season. The tagging and running were both great and the support play was superb.
The Chiefs started the Monmouth tournament with a convincing 9-1 win against Tredegar with some good free running rugby with tries from Nicolaj (4), Theo (3), Ben and Griff.
The wheels came off the chariot (not for the first time during the weekend!) against a strong Gwernyfed side when a poor first half led to a half time deficit. The boys rallied though losing by a credible 7-4 with tries from Theo (2), Bertie (1) and Nicolaj (1).
