Treasurers Report & Committee Report 2018 - 19

Dear All,

Please see attached draft end of year accounts, these are subject to minor change and have not yet been reviewed by our accountants at UHY Hacker Young.

You will note that whilst income levels remain the same, primarily through increased sponsorship, that there has been a drop in bar sales, catering, general donations (mainly due to a £5k contribution from YR towards the Hub Officer the year before and Biennial VP payments in the previous year). Lotto income is down, as are handling fees from tickets, which reflects the struggles we had in the Autumn to offload our allocation, although we did make a marginal profit. Kit sales are up which is good, although room letting is marginally down. Grant contributions have also dropped but this is due to not having a Hub Officer. Please note that this includes a community chest grant of £1.5k which we received on the basis that we qualified a certain number of level 1 and level 2 coaches. A lot of these decreases will reflect cancelled games and having to play mid-week fixtures towards the end of season. It has had, and continues to have, a detrimental impact on the clubs finances when weekend games are called off.

Moving on to expenses, significant increased costs were coaching fees, travel expenses, pitch maintenance and of course new kit. Coaching fees have increased due to the employment of both Paul and Ross, but in my view this is more than offset by the magnificent performance of the 1st XV in Division 2 East this season, securing promotion and the league this season. They have established themselves as a fine coaching team and we are lucky to have them. The travel expenses increase is principally due to a payment of £3k towards the November tour which fell into this financial year but also includes coach travel hire and other reimbursed travel expenses.

Pitch maintenance costs have escalated this year and were meant only to be in place for two years as part of our grant application following the installation of the floodlights, we have exceeded this by some 6 or 7 months. This will need to be addressed, although the pitches are now all in excellent condition. Please note that this cost also includes the astro pitch hire.

Other costs incurred during the year include £13k towards the showers project at the club house. There is still a grant of £3k outstanding on this but this cannot be finalised until the project is complete; when the club has sufficient funds I would suggest that this is carried out. The cost of the showers are shown in the balance sheet with the increase in the equipment assets (after depreciation) and in the increase in building repairs.

Subscriptions are up as a consequence of increased Sky costs (offset by Molson Coors cash discounts) and BT Sport. Our agreement with BT Sport is now open for re-negotiation or cancellation. There has also been a saving in utility supplies, due to a change of supplier on electricity. Otherwise the other expenses are largely unchanged from last year.

Regards,

Gabby Hilu

Committee Report 2018 - 19

Dear MRFC Members,

Important Information. The MRFC Annual General Meeting is being held on the 16th May from 7.30pm. This is your chance to vote on the committee who will direct the club into the future. Your vote will be vital in ensuring the future direction of your rugby club. Please read the information below. Thank you for your time, consideration and support.

Our club objectives during my seven seasons as Senior Club Chairman and two seasons as Young Rugby Chairman has always been to ensure that we have a safe, fun, friendly, family orientated club environment - where we can nurture rugby playing ladies and gentlemen, who understand the ethos of our team game, both on and off the field of play, creating rugby playing “Warriors and Gentlemen”.

We have been successful in securing funding through our wonderful sponsors, our members and patrons, which has allowed us to fulfil many of our key objectives over the years and allowed us to build a sustainable future for
MRFC:

Our Major Achievements include:

  • Complete club house refurbishment – facilitating better use of the club house for social events and functions generating much needed revenue.
  • The installation of floodlights over two pitches on Chippy – significantly increasing training ability and numbers.
  • A complete ground maintenance programme on Chippy to ensure excellent playing and training surfaces.
  • The appointment of a Schools HUB Rugby Officer to build MRFC community relations our club brand and promoting the game in our local schools.
  • MRFC now enjoy a greater number of young players and age group teams than the vast majority of other teams in our Region.
  • MRFC have also developed the most highly qualified young rugby coaching structure in the Dragons Region.
  • New shower facilities have been installed at both the MRFC and Sports Association club houses.
  • The MRFC young rugby tournament is a great success every year, as are the numerous young and senior tours that we have all enjoyed.
  • Major social events, enjoyed in Monmouth and at Cardiff Internationals, have also been a key success in recent years.
  • Collectively we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for our chosen charities over the years and invested in community initiatives.

Senior Squad Success:

The senior playing section of the club has enjoyed enormous success in recent seasons.
Twice League Champions, Ivor Jones Cup winners and promotion to Division 1 East for the first time the our 145 year history.
It has been wonderful to see this group of young men, the vast majority of which have progressed through Monmouth young rugby, enjoy such success.
Thank you again to coaches Paul Emanuelli and Ross Coombes, the management team and 1st XV captain Zenon for developing such an excellent team ethic within the senior playing squad. Long may this success continue into Division1 East where we will play the likes of Ponytpool Utd, Cwmbran and Penallta.

New Committee:

Our objective as a club has always been the development of rugby football union in the Monmouth community.
I am pleased to be able to propose an excellent team of rugby administrators who will be able to meet the challenges of the future head on and lead us to a sustainable and successful future.

I am delighted to see our senior players taking such a keen role in developing the club’s future.

The Future:

Looking to the future, we face a number of challenges, which I am sure our new committee will be able to meet head on:
We need to secure the future of MRFC young rugby and the development of our youth section which has been missing for many years. We need to ensure that all of our players continue to enjoy the best coaching and playing facilities as well as the best kit and social environment.
An opportunity exists to develop a new MRFC stadium and club house on the Sports Ground, working in conjunction with our friends from the Sports Association clubs. Detailed plans are in place and I would like to thank both Dickie McLennan and Gabby Hilu for their roles in working with me and the SA clubs on this very exciting project.

The achievement of these future objectives and the future success of our club will largely depend on the appointment of my proposed new committee at the upcoming AGM on Thursday 16th May.
