The good and the great of Monmouth RFC attended at the Blake Theatre on Friday 22nd January for a pre Six Nations Celebrity Dinner. The Dinner was a fundraiser for the new community based WRU/MRFC Rugby Hub Schools Officer Initiative, which sees Club Rugby Officers being deployed into the schools, to assist with the development of the game within both the Monmouth Comprehensive School and the Boys School, and to encourage children to play rugby.

The event was a huge success with a number of excellent auction items, including the Wales v England match ball from 2015, with auctioneer Bill Evans making a great success of the evening.

Monmouth RFC Life Membership was awarded to longstanding servant of the Club - Byron Hapgood. Byron has served at the club for over 40 years, as a player, coach, Chairman and has represented the Club committee in every senior position. Byron played an instrumental role in extending and renovating the existing clubhouse and the Sports Association Pavilion and has played a key part in running the Club over many years.

Club Trustee and Life Member, Wyn Hughes, paid tribute to fellow Trustee Byron with a glowing accolade of his hard work and total commitment to the Club. Byron is the 17th Life Member to have been appointed since 1960, when records began at the Club.

International rugby commentator and Monmothian, Eddie Butler, was awarded an Honorary Membership of Monmouth RFC, in recognition of his services to Monmouth Rugby. A former pupil at Monmouth Boys School and Monmouth RFC player, Eddie enjoyed an illustrious career with Pontypool and Wales. In recent years he has become the voice of international rugby commentary, complementing his writing skills as a journalist and author.

Both Byron and Eddie gave entertaining and enlightening speeches after being presented with their awards by Chairman, Lloyd Davies.

The evening was capped off with an excellent speech from Robert Jones, former Welsh International and British Lion, who also had the audience in stiches.

Chairman of Monmouth RFC, Lloyd Davies, commented as follows: -

“It was great to be a part of such a wonderful evening. The evening was a fundraiser for the Monmouth Rugby School Hub Officer Role and it was great to see Matt Penny and Jon Bevan and the teachers at the event. The WRU have been hugely supportive and provided us with some fantastic auction items to help fund the project. We are very much trying to build a community Club in Monmouth, where children and young individuals are able to take full advantage of our wonderful sport.

“It was a privilege to present these awards to Byron and Eddie. These are two incredible individuals, who have helped to shape the world of Monmouth Rugby over very many years. Everyone had a fantastic evening and it was wonderful to see so many old faces coming back into the Club and enjoying each other’s company once again. We look forward to hosting the next event in the not too distant future”.
