U13 v NHSOB (Away) 27 Sep 2009

14-10 Win

We managed to make quorum for this week's game despite injuries and other absences. Traffic/direction difficulties meant we started with only thirteen players but NHSOB very kindly lent us a couple until late arrivals came. In fact, we had one for the whole game as no sooner than having a full house Will Richards had to come off as the result of a boot to the head.

For the first half we were more than a little rusty and Newport used some of their heavies to drive through us scoring two tries. It could easily have been more but for a relentless defensive display.

Come the second half we came out like a different team and really took the offensive to Newport, taking them by surprise. However, we still found it hard to retain the ball - something that we will work on intensively for the foreseeable future. But yet again it was our defnsive pressure that worked in our benefit, forcing the opposition into errorsb that lead to a scrum and then the ball went down the line to new recruit Theo Sacks who just opened up through a gap for a sixty yard run and there was no way they were going to stop him before he placed the ball under the posts. Matt Doyle duely slotted it and the score was 10-7.

Newport came back hard and once again placed us under pressure but yet again we defended like lions and caused them to make handling errors which lead to Theo getting an interception and bang he was away. Under the posts again and Matt duely obliged. 14-10.

Newport were in shock but still came back and again we resisted with Zak leading the defensive effort. They did not pass.

So there we are - we've started the season with a win. This is even more special as before Sunday we actually haven't played as a team in any format and five of our players were new to the squad. Our rucking was immense, even admired by the opposition coaches, while I have already made much of our defence. Looking ahead we still need to tidy up a lot of things but it was a great start and all the boys put in a stunning effort. It gives me great hopes for the season.

Also thanks to Neil Williams for being such a help.
