U16 v Abergavenny (Away) 15 Jan 2012

15-15 Draw

This was an extremely intense match and The Warriors maintained their discipline for most of the match.
Monmouth started in spirited fashion and took the game to Abergavenny. After a kick ahead Monmouth closed down the Abergavenny defence, turned over the full back and Harry Blain scored Monmouth’s opening try which was converted by Max Davies. Within minutes however a kick ahead by Abergavenny took an uneven bounce and Abergavenny beat the Monmouth defence to the ball to score a soft try. A penalty kick from Max Davies put the score at 10 – 5 to Monmouth at half time. The Monmouth indiscipline took its toll during the first ten minutes of the 2nd half when Abergavenny scored 2 tries to put them 15 – 10 ahead. The score remained this way until the last minute of the match.

The Warriors dominated up front and the backs showed moments of real flair but this was Abergavenny and it was always going to be intense and keenly contested. Monmouth battled against absolutely everything that was thrown at them and in the last 10 minutes Abergavenny had to resort to uncontested scrums, their front row having been overshadowed by the Monmouth front row.
Monmouth were awarded a rare penalty 15m from the Abergavenny try line and the referee confirmed there was no time for another line out. Max Davies took a tap penalty, passed to Jordan Southway who “Bullocked” towards the try line with close support from the Monmouth pack. Quick re-cycled ball saw Will England dive and with an outstretched arm scored the try that Monmouth fully deserved and brought the scores level at 15 all. Clearly the conversion from the touchline was going to be the last action of the match. A great kick by Max Davies just missed and the game was drawn.

For the second week running this was a fantastic squad effort and Coach Lloyd Davies awarded the Man of the Match to all of The Warriors!!

The Warriors fixture list is very strong in January and next week sees a return fixture with Cheltenham.
