Druids v RTB Ebbw Vale (Home) 22 Mar 2014

57-5 Win

Druids thumping Victory

Monmouth Druids entertained RTB Ebbw Vale rfc in a league game on Chippenham Mead. Their squad was full of young players with only two ‘old timers’ who were over the advanced age of thirty years.

The Druids were placed much higher in the table than their visitors so confidence would have been high even for a youthful team.

RTB had the benefit of a brisk breeze on an otherwise good day for rugby. It was evident from the start that the Druids looked to pose more problems for RTB in the opening encounters. The visitors were forced to try to contain the Druids attacks and the RTB defence looked vulnerable,

The home Number 8, Mike Price broke from a scrum and made a forceful run up field but was held. From the resulting set piece, Outside Half Matt King broke the RTB defence and powered over for the first try which Centre Adam Roberts converted.

This was quickly followed by two more tries from a rampant Druids side. Flanker Chris Davies and Matt King again touched down, one of which was converted by Adam Roberts. The Druids suffered from ‘white line fever’ rather than move the ball through the hand to a team mate.

A 5 metre scrum which put the visitors on the back foot was the basis for the next score. Quick ball allowed strong running from Adam Roberts saw him speed over for a try which he duly converted. The interval arrived with the Druids leading by 26-0 and the match result in no doubt.

The second half saw the Druids backs looking threatening and from such a move Full Back Rob Erskine touched down after good interpassing. Prop Jamie Ridgeway and Centre Dan Williams had some stirring runs which only desperate tackling denied. Ridgeway lost possession of the ball in crossing the RTB try line-disappointing and frustrating.

Flanker Gareth Morgan was the next to add to the Druids points total. In typically robust fashion Morgan forced himself over after a concerted forward drive. Adam Roberts converted to stretch the lead to 38-0.

To the surprise of everyone RTB scored the next try. A long kick out of defence incurred a Druids defensive mistake and good backing up by the visitors wing saw him dive over the Druids for an unconverted try.

It was back to the ‘norm’ however when Druids Centre Adam Roberts strong running saw him power over and convert to make the score 45-5. Matt King scored the penultimate try to bring up the 50 point mark. The Druids scored the final try through Centre Dan Williams, again from pressure and good handling. Roberts converted to make the final score 57-5, a thumping victory.

Many fine performances from a side whose strong running and handling skills made the difference. Points scorers Adam Roberts and Matt King obviously deserve mention but special mention of Prop Jamie Ridgeway whose charging runs were impressive. On the wing Kessler Mobbs-Morgan looked promising and in the lineout and the loose Dan Anstey stood out. There will be sterner opposition of course but the Druids looked good.

Tries: M.King (3), C.Davies, A.Roberts(2), R.Erskine, G.Morgan, D.Wiliams
