U12 v St Josephs (home) 23 Nov 2014

15-5 Win

Monmouth lions travelled to St Josephs, Newport this weekend to try and go one better than Wales and put all their previous performances into a winning result. (Even though it’s not all about winning)

Both teams started with 13 players which meant there was an abundance of space and a lot of ground to cover. Monmouth started well, showing they were eager for the game but a quick turn over and some shoddy tackling saw St Josephs run nearly the length of the Pitch to score the first points. This wound Monmouth up who replied with strong running from the forwards Morgan Wainwright and Angus Whitehead which saw Morgan crashing through St Josephs defence to score a good try in the corner.

The lions were starting to get the upper hand in the forwards with strong tackling off Xavier Turner and Griff Copley. With the strong tackling up front we forced St Josephs into knock ons which then saw Angus Whitehead crashing over from an attacking 5 meter scrum.

The second half saw more of the same with the lions backs starting to find gaps with Charlie Weldon pulling the strings at 10. On another day there could of been 3 or 4 more tries from the lions back line but the final pass kept going to floor. Charlie got in on the try scoring by making use of the vast space outside which was being left by a St Josephs team that were beginning to struggle with the pace of the game.

A very good game played by all today, with a stand out performance in the forwards by Angus Whitehead who continues to show his natural pace and strength. He would have 2 tries after bursting through the St Josephs defence and the try line at his mercy. Unfortunately a sniper in the trees must have shot him down as he fell over his own feet.

Regarding the backs - Charlie Weldon showed he is finding his feet with a new backline and bigger pitch and gets a mention along with the ever reliable Jonathan Pearce who looks at home alongside Hamish Lawson in the centre...
