U13 v Blackwood (home) 06 Dec 2015

5-15 Loss

For the first time ever, the lions hosted Blackwood this weekend and with Blackwood turning up with some huge lads in the forwards the lions pack new they had to perform. The game started with the lions taking the fight straight to Blackwood with the lions putting all the pressure on the Blackwood try line but Blackwood's defence held firm, this was also helped my Monmouth inability to finish try scoring opportunities.

Blackwood got a turnover and one of their very tall forwards managed to evade one or two tackles and run the length of the pitch to get the first try on the board. The lions replied with a try of their own through some quick thinking from No.10 Charlie Weldon going blind after some phases and spotting a gap going through to score a good try.

Blackwood again made the most of some weak tackling grabbing another try against the run of play. Monmouth though had most of the possession thanks to some very hard work and aggressive tackling by the forwards but the Lions backs just couldn't get over the gain line. Strong performances by Oli Parks, captain Morgan Wainwright and Harry Powell up front set the tone for the half with the Lions pack winning their own ball and pinching a couple but again Blackwood scored a well worked try out wide by recycling and running at the gaps outside.

Second half came with some stern words of advice off the Lions coaches for our Lions and we managed to pick up the pace and put pressure again on the Blackwood try line which ended up with our No.9 Lewis Richards who was having one of his best games constantly badgering the opposition No.9 and No.8 (jumping on his back each time he tried to pick up from the scrum) capitalising on the pressure and diving over for a try only for it to be brought back for a Monmouth 5-meter scrum.

The pressure Monmouth were putting on Blackwood finally came to a head when a fight broke out between the forwards which saw coaches from both sides calming the players down.

The final whistle came and Monmouth lions lost 3 tries to 1.

Story of the day for the coaches was that the score didn't reflect the game. Performance is improving but again we won more possession and had more territory than Our opposition but are not taking full advantage of this behind.

Man of match was No.9 Lewis Richards
