Druids v Hereford (away) 20 Feb 2016

8-48 Loss

Druids well beaten in Hereford

Monmouth Druids five match winning run came to a shattering end against Hereford RFC. This latest fixture, arranged at the last minute, saw the Druids field a much weakened side short of players and their regular captain. The dearth of players was so desperate they were forced to field two borrowed players from the home side plus fielding a couple of players making their debuts.

The soft, wet pitch made handling tricky and passing full of risks. The bigger home pack, from the kick off, were quickly on the offensive and forced the Druids on the defensive by their co-ordinative play. The first Hereford try came from a Druids, miss cued relieving kick which was safely gathered and the ball moved to the wing. An overlap saw the right winger cross near the corner flag for an unconverted try.

A second try followed, this time from a scrum but on this occasion was converted to move the score to 10-0. Yet another Hereford converted try was scored to stretch the lead to 17-0.

Struck by this reverse, the Druids mounted a series of attacks. A rolling maul close to the Hereford try saw the visitors crash over for the score. The player emerging from the pile of bodies was, I think Andy Howells, but I could be wrong. The conversion kick failed but Kris Gordon kicked a penalty goal shortly after to make the score 17-8 as the referee blew the interval whistle.

After the break the home side had a’ purple patch’ and scored five further tries mainly through Druids handling errors. Quick responces and swift action took the score to 48-8. A decisive victory from a Hereford side that was accommodating and dominant.

For the Druids Chris Reed had some stirring runs whilst Dan Ansty foraged and tackled well. When will the first xv come calling?

The Druids players honoured the fixture and represented the Monmouth club. A few players had given reasons for their unavailability but what of the others? A special mention for 14 year old Brian came to watch his Dad play but ended up carrying the water bottles. Well done lad!
