U13 v RTB Ebbw Vale (away) 20 Mar 2016

On a bright and sunny morning, Monmouth lions hosted RTB Ebbw Vale after the lions previous two games have resulted in poor performances and losses hampered by low numbers due to school fixtures and unavailability of players.

With a full squad to pick from and some words of encouragement from their coaches, the LIONS took the field in a positive manor, looking to show their opposition what they are about and compensate for their last to below par performances.
The lions started strongly, spinning the ball from end to end showing a huge improvement in their passing and rucking skills. The lions dominated possession but Ebbw Vale's hard working defence kept the lions at bay until Jamie Stracken playing at no.8 picked up from a scrum on the half way line and used his pace and strength out-sprinting the Vale defence to score under the posts.

The Lions again upped the pace of the game with the forwards dominating the ruck area with their power and aggression allowing the Lions backs to constantly attack out wide. Key to this was not only the forwards but our n.9 Lewis Richards who not only got on the score sheet but provided the link between the forwards and backs with his crisp passing and intelligent runs from the base of rucks.

With so much ball, the Lions back line were revelling in possession with Charlie Weldon have a good game at 10 toying with the opposition directing his backline at will.

The Lions back 3 (wingers and full back) were also full of running which made for an enjoyable game to watch.

The second half saw much of the same with our forwards showing the way forward, with Ben Williams (second row) catching the ball off kick off and smashing his way through the Ebbw Vale pack and team running over half the length on the pitch and while being tackled approx 5yrds short of the tryline popping the ball up to our fullback Oli Williams who finished the run by diving over for the try of the game.

Ebbw Vale scored a consolation try towards the end but that couldn't dent the Lions enjoyment as smiles were on all faces as the final whistle came and the Monmouth lions returned to the type of performances we've got used to.
