Monmouth RFC enjoy a day training with Cross Keys RFC

THREE boys from Monmouth Rugby Football Club saw their hard work rewarded last Wednesday (22nd July) at a prestigous awards evening.

Held at Pontypool Rugby Football Club, the event closed the Pontypool and District Rugby Union season, and district caps and medals were presented to the young players.

Mattie Cotton, Nikolaj Spooner and Joseph Henry were all recognised from the Monmouth club, all having enjoyed a successful season.

Mattie and Nikolaj did the double, winning Man of the Match awards for both the A and B teams at a recent event, with Nikolaj picking up a further six such awards during the season.

This helped see him finish the year with both the Players’ Player of the Season award and the coaches’ award for the Most Improved Player of the Season.

Nikolaj and Mattie were picked to play for the county too while Mattie collected the Coaches’ Player of the Year award and was picked as vice-captain at the district club next year.

The pair also travelled to Italy recently, on tour with the club as part of the district side that won every game to win the tournament – including beating Benetton Treviso in the final.

Chairman of Monmouth Young Rugby, Jonathan Henry, said: "Mattie, Nikolaj and Joseph have had an awesome season at both Monmouth RFC and with District Rugby at Pontypool. From their humble
beginnings at Monmouth Rugby Club some five years ago, these three boys have shown a real passion and desire for rugby and are truly deserved winners of their district caps.
We wish them every success in their future rugby endeavours. I am sure their parents are looking forward to a rest from driving them all over south Wales this season!"

Congratulations to Monmouth RFC Youth players Pete Saran, Youth Team Captain Tom Hawkins, Will Korb and Charlie Rogers who all represented Gwent District Youth against Caerphilly District Youth recently. Well done gentlemen. Thank you to Cedric Steele, Andrew Davies and Andy Tabb for doing such a wonderful job of looking after the MRFC Youth team this season. Well done to Andrew and Andy for their great work in Managing and Coaching the Gwent District Youth.
